• she’s no higher ranking than a peridot but is a gem intended for combat, a foot soldier (different from, say, a quartz, which are huge super-soldiers)
• she fought on the side of homeworld during the war but her gem was cracked and left behind in the strawberry battlefield
• steven and the crystal gems find her gem and heal it so she can join up with them!
  
• generally upbeat and positive, beryl is great at working in groups (that’s the nature of the job she was made to do) but in the past she’s never really had to form her own beliefs on… well, anything, she just follows orders. which is why she immediately falls in with the crystal gems
• at first they don’t know that she fought for homeworld and they’re really surprised when they find out, but she doesn’t seem to really care about the conflict or what’s happened since, just whatever the current task at hand is
• she’s a tireless worker and her ranged weapon makes her useful on team missions
  
• her lack of ideals and beliefs means that sometimes she can seem rather aloof and detached, and in a way, she is. she would do anything a superior told her to do without questioning it, which is sort of off-putting to the free-thinking crystal gems
• learning the stories of mankind and the crystal gems, however, has begun to challenge her to think for herself and reimagine her own role in the world
• she gets along especially well with steven and pearl
